‘No to
elections’ – Voice of the disappointed Malaiyur villagers
The only way
to reach Malaiyur is by a tough journey for 4km into the rocky
hills.
The
school going children, patients, old people, women, all depend
on this way alone whatever may be the climatic condition.
The ‘road’
often traveled with no other option

The only
means of transportation

Always
they do not get a drop
Out of the
350 families residing in this village for the past 40 years, not
even a single girl child could do her studies beyond class 10.
The village school is up to class 5 and the children are to
travel nearly 3 km apart from the hilly road to continue their
studies. Many children are school dropouts, especially girls, as
their parents do not dare to allow them to travel through the
hills to continue their studies.
All alone on
his way to school

Little
rest after a tedious walk

School
drop outs to drop the people

The
village school
Sick people
are carried in cradles to the hospital 7km away from this
village. Recently a pregnant woman carried like this had
delivered her child on the way which died on birth.

Ups
and downs – holding the breath they walk

Miles
to go before he gets treated

From
food to building materials anything and everything is to be
carried
It is
painful, that many such cases have not bothered any officials.
The only officials concerned of the villagers are said to be the
election duty officers who visit the village only on the day of
elections.

We
are trying our best – The Village Heads
Today the
Malaiyur villagers are part of our Citizens for Human Rights
Movement (CHRM) and had made representations to the district
authorities seeking basic facilities like proper road,
healthcare etc.

The
authorities have for the first time responded saying that all
would be taken care once the elections are over. Let’s hope it
is not an election promise!

Hoping for a better tomorrow
